Malibu Campus Plan
Development of a master plan for Malibu High
School and Malibu Middle School. MMHS began
life as Malibu Park Middle School in the 1960’s.
In the 1990’s, the District elected to construct
new buildings and add high school students,
creating Malibu Middle and High School. This has
presented issues with 6th graders sharing space
with 12th graders, a less than optimal situation. In
about 2014, the District discovered the existence
of PCBs in building materials throughout the
MMHS campus, in buildings constructed before
1979. The Malibu community has expressed a
strong desire to separate the Middle and High
Schools and to replace all buildings that include
PCB-containing material. SMMUSD has now
embarked on an ambitious plan to create two
adjacent campuses for the middle school and
the high school. Massetti Consulting has led this
effort, utilizing LPA as the master plan architect.
We have conducted multiple community meetings
and have led small-group meetings with affected constituency groups. The plan is progressing well and is
expected to be presented to the Board of Education in late 2019 for adoption and implementation.
